USA Drums Up Flames Support

United States Of America (USA) Ambassador to Malawi David Young has sent a message of encouragement to the Malawi National Football Team, the Flames as they face Guinea’s Syli Nationale on today at the General Lansana Conté Stadium in TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 Group D tie.

In a video message to the Flames posted on US Embassy’s Malawi social media handles, Young said he and his mission team wishes the Flames all the best.

He said: “I just want to give a big shout out to the Flames. Go Flames as you take on Guinea!”

Young, who watched the Flames beat Ethiopia 2-1 courtesy of Gabadinho Mhango brace in AFCON 2023 Group D opener alongside Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera and Vice President Saulos Chilima at Bingu National Stadium, said he was confident that the Flames can repeat last Sunday’s performance.

AmaZulu striker Gabadinho Mhango struck twice in the first period from the spot to put the hosts ahead before the visitors pulled one back through Abubeker Nasir also from a penalty.

He said: “We know you are going to do a great job just like you did on Sunday. We know you are going to bring your enthusiasm, your energy. We at the US Embassy we are behind you and want to wish you well. Moto Flames Moto!”

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu thanked Young and the US Embassy for the support.

He said: “What an inspiring message from the Ambassador David [Young] of the US Embassy. He certainly has fallen in love with the Flames.

“We hugely value such a gesture and we appreciate the endeavours to keep the fire burning.”

The Flames will be seeking back-to-back straight wins to extend their lead at the top of Group D. However, they face the Syli Nationale, who are without a win in five games in all competitions.

After failing to have a dream start to their campaign following a 1-0 defeat away to Egypt on Sunday, Syli Nationale are hoping to revive their bid.
