President Lazarus Chakwera has warned some chewa chiefs who are planning to hold a vigil at the Office of the President and Cabinet in Lilongwe at Capital Hill that the law will take its course.
This comes as the chiefs from Dowa and Ntchisi districts have threatened to hold the virgil in a bid to force authorities promote some of them from the positions of Village heads to Traditional Authorities.
But speaking after meeting stakeholders in Dowa today, President Chakwera through her Deputy Minister of Local Government, Halima Daud, said government will not condone such a move as it is aimed at causing breach of peace in the country.
According to Daud, promotions of chiefs is done at community level and not by the government.
She has since accused Executive Director of Bwalo La Achewa Foundation, Reverend Fly Somanje, of being behind the move.
Instead of threatening the chiefs, the best conflict management is dialogue or a fact finding group which will in turn brief him. Freedom of expression, association, gathering, speech and other freedoms are enshrined in the Human Rights legal guidelines and framework. Malawians as bonafide citizens shouldn’t be bullied whenever they want to be heard. Where is the “Listening government” analogy gone?
