Chakwera Under Fire

The once Mighty Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Reverend Lazarus Chakwera has been heavily criticized for receiving free parliament sitting allowances since June last year.

Chakwera who was elected as Member of Parliament for Lilongwe North West Constituency during May 2019 polls has not been attending parliament sessions despite receiving ‘huge’ sitting allowances.

Chakwera has since returned half of the money to parliament after being summoned to explain his absenteeism.

“Chakwera has paid back the money paid to him while he was out of parliament,” confirmed MCP’s Chief Whip Samuel Kawale.

Commenting on the matter Political commentator, Henry Chingaipe said Chakwera’s gesture needs a lot to be desired.

“It is good thing to return the money to government but one would want to know why it has taken long to return the money.

When did he realize that his account was credited with allowances for the sittings of parliament which was not attending?” questions Chingaipe
