Malawian men jailed for selling dead bodies

Phalombe, July 20: Phalombe First Grade Magistrate court has convicted and sentenced Charles Katunga and Amos Magombo to 10 years’ imprisonment each for possessing human bodies and trespassing into a graveyard.

The court through state prosecutor Sub Inspector Dingiswayo Mbepula heard that on June 21, 2023, the two were offering for sale dead bodies of two twin infants to a business person at Migowi Trading Centre.

Appearing before First Grade Magistrate Leornad Mtosa the convicts pleaded guilty to the charge leveled against them and in mitigation, they pleaded for leniency saying they are too old to serve a custodial sentence.

According to Kapanja, in submission, prosecutor Mbepula prayed for stiffer punishment saying the conduct of the two was a threat to the society and their action emotionally injured the bereaved family.

Passing judgement, Magistrate Mtosa concurred with the state and sentenced the two to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour to deter other would be offenders.

Katunga (50) hails from Mgona Village while as Magombo (63) comes from Njaya Village both from Traditional Authority Kaduya in the district.
