Chiefs asked to sensitize subjects about MW2063

By Ireen Mseteka

Likoma, July 5: Director General for National Planning Commission (NPC), Dr Thomas Munthali says chiefs have a vital role to play in raising awareness about Malawi 2063 (MW 2063), the country’s development blueprint.

Munthali made the remarks Tuesday in Likoma during an orientation session on MW2063 and MW2063 first 10-year implementation plan (MIP – 1) with Likoma District Council Management and heads of sectors.

“We had gone round, asking views from citizens including those in Likoma and now that the MW2063 is launched, people need to know what the full vision for the nation is.

“Sensitizing the council and chiefs is very important because it is them that will take the message to communities about the MW2063,” Munthali said.

He said MW2063 has reached implementation stage hence chiefs need to be aware of their role which includes inculcating mindset change in their subjects on the importance of hard work and self-reliance.

Senior Chief Mkumpha III said the awareness about MW2063 has come at the right time when the district is in the process of developing.

“We are going to work hand in hand with government as well as the council to ensure MW2063 is successfully implemented.

“I hope and trust that things will change in the district in terms of development with the coming in of the national development blueprint,” said Mkumpha.

District Commissioner (DC) for Likoma, Abubakar Nkhoma said the engagement with NPC was necessary as there were knowledge gaps amongst government officers as far as MW2063 is concerned.

“The Commission has come at the right time when we are also updating our district development plan (DDP). We will make sure that we align the district aspirations with the vision of the country,” said Nkhoma.
