Do Me a Favour Invades State House, Angers President Chakwera

Malawi President Reverend Lazarus Chakwera has expressed anger over the conduct of some poor Malawians and members of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for asking him for a favour, saying he is the Head of State not their families.

The self-claimed servant leader Reverend Chakwera was speaking during the launch of Malawi 2063 First 10 Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1) at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

According to President Reverend Chakwera, on Monday alone he received over 5000 ‘Do me a Favour’ messages from economically unstable youths and women from across the country.

“As we speak, I have over 500 messages on my phone requesting that I run each family for them as president.

Members of Parliament have messages asking them to run families of their constituents. No country can develop with such mindset,” said President Chakwera

Commenting on the MIP-1 president Reverend Chakwera said the implementation of Malawi 2063 needs the participation of all Malawians for it to be successfully implemented.

According to Chakwera, Malawi 2063 is a photograph of the new Malawi, the country is intending to build and become by the time it turns one hundred years.

“It is a plan of action for all of us, and each of us is responsible for it. In fact, after this launch, anytime you hear another Malawian complaining about a politician, you should ask them if they themselves have started reading the implementation plan and if they themselves have started implementing it at household level,” he pointed out.

The President said the nation has agreed to implement the plan in parts starting with the first 10 years of the 42-year project.

He said Malawians should cure the infectious habit of demanding more from politicians instead of doing things on their own.

Chakwera added that the 10 Year Implementation Plan was a 210 page document that demands action from every single household and family in the country.

“It is not just a document of what needs to be done by the President, or the Vice President, or Parliamentarians,” he noted.

Chakwera said the Implementation Plan has key milestone to be achieved by 2030 of having per capita income of US$1,000.

The Malawi Leader said building a new Malawi was heavy work that demands action from all of people and there was simply no time to waste.

He said over the years Malawi has been known of producing good plans over the years but implementation has been a challenge a things which needs to be changed for betterment of the development path of the country.

Vice President and Minister Economic Planning and Public Sector Reforms, Dr Saulos Chilima said the Malawi 2063 is developmental blue print for country and the documents capture the aspirations of all Malawians.

He said the launch of the MIP-1 was a milestone to achieving the aspirations of the country’s development needs.

Chilima said the plan has two Enablers one mind set change and public sector reforms which need to be looked into critically in the implementation process of the Malawi 2063.

Chairperson for National Planning Commission (NPC), Prof Richard Mkandawire said the implementation of the plan needs to embrace all categories of partners building on the consultative spirit that was behind its formulation.
