Parliament to Set Date For Fresh Polls

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says only Parliament can set a new date for the much awaited fresh presidential elections following the Supreme Court verdict.

Only Parliament Can Set a Date for Polls – Ansah

MEC’s Chairperson, Justice Dr. Jane Ansah made the remarks on Wednesday during National Elections Consultative Forum held at Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi.

“The judgement of the Supreme Court has to be complied with. It is the responsibility of Parliament to decide on the date of holding the polls. The Commission is confident that Parliament will do the needful very soon,” said Dr. Ansah

Commenting on the official campaign period which is currently underway, Dr. Ansah said the campaign will end 48 hours before the polling day as required by the law.

“The campaign period was expected to run up to 30 June, 2020 but because the actual polling date has not been set, stakeholders should know that according to law campaign period must come to an end 48 hours to the start of polling,” she said

Meanwhile, three presidential candidates have been approved for the elections including Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Professor Peter Mutharika and his runningmate Atupele Muluzi.

The two other candidates are Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera and Peter Kuwani of Mbakuwaku Movement for Development (MMD).
