Joyce Banda sister, 2 others sue government for false imprisonment

KUMPUKWE: Suing government for false imprisonment, defamation and malicious prosecution

Cecilia Kumpukwe, sister to Malawi’s former president, Joyce Banda and three others have sued government for false imprisonment in connection to a fake resignation letter allegedly written by Vice President Saulos Chilima.

Kumpukwe , as well as Stella Assani, Ackson Kalaile Banda and Yesaya Mkwala were arrested in 2017 on allegations that they authored the fake letter. The four were released on bail but were not tried and the case was later dismissed because there was no evidence from the state.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Mwaiwathu Majawa, lawyer from Ritz Attorneys said his clients are suing for false imprisonment, defamation and malicious prosecution.

Meanwhile, Judge Dingiswayo Madise has adjourned the case to 24th November 2021 after Kumpukwe, Assani and Kalaile Banda testified in court today
