Governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has admitted committing various atrocities during President Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda’s one party era.
MCP’s Publicity Secretary, Ezekiel Ching’oma made the remarks in a statement barely hours after Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) accused MCP of launching a new wave of terror.
This follows Blantyre-Bangwe incident where suspected MCP youths ‘attacked and hacked’ opposition members.
But in reaction Ching’oma said: “The DPP have claimed that MCP committed atrocities during one party regime state. Fine. But that was during one party regime state;”
“When multiparty democracy was ushered, a lot of things changed so with the MCP which has new blood in its ranks. As such, you cannot link the new personalities in the party with the called past atrocities.”
MCP is a political party in Malawi. It was formed as a successor party to the banned Nyasaland African Congress when the country, then known as Nyasaland, was under British rule.
