Govt to Turn Likoma Into Modern Tourism Hospot

Likoma, May 6, Mana: Government has plans to modernize Likoma District into a vibrant tourism hot spot area in order to boost tourism industry in Malawi.

Minister of Environment, Tourism and Wildlife, Symon Vuwa Kaunda made the remarks on Wednesday, on the sidelines of a familiarization tour on the island as well as to alert the islanders on coronavirus.

He said the island has huge tourism potential and that is why government upgraded the airport to ensure the place is accessible through all possible means of transport.

“Likoma district is one of the most beautiful places in Malawi and government has huge plans towards making the district a tourism hot spot area.

“We have plans to build hotels on this island, improve the available roads to ensure every tourism site on this island is accessible,” said Kaunda.

The minister appreciated efforts being undertaken by the district council on Coronavirus prevention by among other things making sure that there is social distancing as well as hand washing.

He said Likoma being a border district with a lot of people coming from Mozambique and Tanzania hence the need to be cautious and alert.

Likoma Director of Health and Social Services, Western Nyirenda said the district is promoting awareness to ensure people adhere to laid down measures of preventing the coronavirus pandemic.
