MEC Must Suspend Voter Registration- Chiefs

Southern Region Chefs have asked Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to suspend Voter registration exercise which is currently underway in some districts across the country amidst coronavirus fears.

Paramount Chief Lundu of Chikwawa district made the call on Saturday in Blantyre at a press briefing which was organized by Traditional leaders from Southern Region.

The lower-shire Chief Lundu observed that many people are shunning the registration exercise in fear of contracting the deadly Covid-19, a diseases caused by coronavirus.

The Paramount Chief then appealed to electoral commission to consider postponing the entire electoral process as a measure of protecting citizens from the pandemic.

Recently, Joint Civil Society Platform On Good Governance (JCSPGG) also asked the commission to suspended voter registration and postpone the presidential elections.

 “We write to request MEC to consider suspending the voter registration exercise in the advent of confirmed covid-19 cases in the country until the spread is contained.  

Continuing with the registration process will put Malawians at risk,” said Fryson Chodzi, National Coordinator for the platform.

Meanwhile, Malawi has a total number of 12 confirmed cases of Covid-19, including two deaths thus according to Minister of Heath Jappie Mhango.

The Constitutional Court on 3rd February nullified the 2019 presidential election results and ordered a fresh election within 150 days and MEC announced that it conduct the polls on 2nd of  July 2020.
