Journalists in Africa have been urged to change the way they report disasters to help communities on the continent minimise disaster risks and losses.
Programme Officer for United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Regional Office for Africa, Isabel Njihia was speaking to African journalists on Monday in Mombasa-Kenya when she officially opened a four-day media training session on disaster risk reduction reporting
Njihia said often times, journalists in Africa only report when disasters occur, neglecting the period prior to disasters.
She said reporting prior to occurrence of disasters could help communities, organisations and states to prepare, adapt to and recover from hazards, shocks or stress that come with them (disasters) without compromising long-term developments.
“African countries suffer from inadequate information to enable them prepare for risks because we only report when disasters have occurred.
“Much as we appreciate the important role you play in dissemination of information on disasters, we still feel there is a lot to be done in ensuring that our communities are given correct information right from the initial stage so that they are prepared,” said Njihia.
She said knowledge gap on disaster issues contributes to insufficient information dissemination to the public, hence the training for the journalists which she said would empower reporters from across Africa to be able to prepare, produce and disseminate compelling stories.
These stories, she said, could lead communities and duty bearers towards a disaster-risk-reduction culture and normalisation.
Disaster Risk Reduction Network of African Journalists (DIRAJ) Chairperson, Edward Wanyonyi said he was happy that there is good progress in coverage of disasters.
“There was that concern that journalists only focus on post-disaster reporting but as a network, we are trying and I believe with capacity building trainings like this, journalists would be made aware of what to report on even at the initial stage,” he said.
Wanyonyi said what was pleasing is that the network is expanding to other countries; a development he said would give room for a wider coverage of disasters before they occur and after occurrence in respective countries.
President of the Association of Environmental Journalists in Malawi, Mathews Malata said it was imperative for journalists in Malawi and Africa as a whole to be equipped with new skills, knowledge and strategies for covering disasters, saying resilient nations cannot be built with a passive media.
“Malawi is prone to different types of disasters and every disaster event comes with new challenges some of which are sophisticated.
“At the same time, new climate change information is being generated daily by different players, therefore such trainings are important.
“Most importantly, we need to highlight stories about the avoided disaster which gives hope to the people and entails progress on national efforts in reducing risk and damage to critical infrastructure and deaths,” he said.
The training was organized by UNDRR in partnership with DIRAJ with financial support from European Commission through the ACP-EU Programme dubbed ‘Building Disaster Resilience in Sub Saharan Africa.’
It drew 41 participants from 20 countries from across Africa including Malawi, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Zambia and Gambia among others.

Throughout the scriptures, God uses the number 3 for confirming things. Allow me to share some examples:

“and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:4 NKJV).

Now what is interesting is the the mark of the beast is described in detail in three different verses (Revelation 13:16,17,18), and each verse lists three different examples of the given subject. The last 3 being the number 6 being used 3 times in a row. Here is a key point to deciphering how to count the number 666.
What does it mean to count the number 666? It means to add up. So how could we add up 666? Call back to mind my earlier point concerning God confirming in threes. So logically, what would be the most rational way to count the number 666? To count it equally in 3’s based off the number. It is not sensible to count it equally as 600+60+6, this would also take us back to the beginning. We cannot count it as 600+600+600, or 60+60+60, because there are no zeroes in between or at the end of 666. The only sensible option is 6+6+6=18. What is fascinating is that the verse that tells us to count the number of the beast itself is verse 18, being the third verse out of 3 verses that describe the mark of the beast. What is 18 divided by 3? 6. So 3×6=18, or 6+6+6=18.
Another fascinating point is the only two other possible combinations (making a total of three possible combinations) for placing a plus symbol in between the 6’s are 66+6=72, and 6+66=72. Count up both 72’s together and you get 144. Why the number 144 is interesting is because the verse following Revelation 13:18 is the first time in God’s word where the 144,000 are being described in detail:
“Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father’s name written on their foreheads…” (Revelation 14:1).
Now if you add up all 3 numbers by counting 666 by moving the “+” symbol around in all three possible combinations, we would get 72+72+18=162. What is interesting about the number 162, is, if you divide 144,000 by 162, you get 888. The name for Jesus in Greek gematria calculates to 888. The New Testament was originally written in Greek. Revelation 14:1 not only mentions the 144,000, but also the Lamb who is the Son of God, Jesus.
Now what is interesting concerning the number for Jesus, 888, is that if you apply this same formula, you get 8+8+8=24. Why the number 24? Revelation chapter 4 tells us there are 24 elders seated around the throne of God. This is the same throne where Jesus sits:
“Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads” (Revelation 4:2-4).
Now if you take 8+8+8=24, and 8+88=96, and 88+8=96, you get 24+96+96=216. Take 144,000 divided by 216 and you get 666. Remember that this was the same exact method to get the number 162 out of counting 666 that brought about the numeral 888 when dividing 144,000 by 162. It’s perpetual.

Jesus says, “but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him(the Holy Spirit) will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Did you know that Jesus spoke more about hell than any one else in God’s holy word, even more than He spoke about heaven?! For this very reason He came to die for us, to save us from this place that we deserve.
He describes hell as a real place where,
“Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44).
And where,
“There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth…” (Luke 13:28).
Jesus tells us who to fear,
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).
“Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.’
Then He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’ And He said to me, ‘Write, for these words are true and faithful.’
And He said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.'” (Revelation 21:1-8).
