By Grace Kapatuka

Salima District Medical Officer Kasondo receives the donation from Chibwana

World Vision Malawi (WVM) on Thursday donated assorted medical supplies to Salima District Hospital to support COVID-19 response.

The supplies that are valued at 8 million kwacha include face masks, clutches and protective wear, among other supplies.

Speaking after the donation handover ceremony, (WVM) Programs Manager for Dedza and Salima districts, Thokozani Chibwana said the organization thought of donating the supplies after a plea from the district hospital which indicated they were in short of the supplies.

“The district team asked for assistance from partners and well-wishers to help them with supplies for response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As World Vision, we respond to issues that affect the communities and that why we are making this donation to help the district hospital to better respond to the fight against the pandemic,” said Chibwana.

He said the gesture is also one way of complementing government’s efforts in the fight against the Corona virus that has affected the whole world including Malawi.

Chibwana also said the donated items will also help improve health service delivery to the people of Salima.

District Medical Officer for Salima, George Kasondo thanked World Vision for the donation which he described as timely.

“In our response plan we indicated that we wanted to start screening people at the entrance of the hospital premises as one way of preventive measures, however we were unable to start because we did not have the protective wear and equipment. With this donation we will start right away,” said Kasondo.

He said the supplies and medical equipment will therefore, help cushion issues surrounding inadequate medical supplies the district is currently facing.

Salima District Health Office (DHO) in conjunction with other stakeholders is currently conducting several activities aimed at preventing the coronavirus.
