Minister Abida Mia hails NWRA

Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia has commended National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) for its endless efforts in restoring watersheds along Shire River catchment area.

Minister Mia was speaking on Friday after NWRA presented a cheque of K22.5 million meant for the exercise to 17-sub-catchment committees at Kunthembwe Extension Planning Area in Blantyre.

According to Abida Mia, restoring watersheds along rivers banks by among others planting trees will help the country in preventing ‘deadly’ disasters such as floods and cyclones.

“If we do not have this, then we are going to have the same problem of flooding we had with all the cyclones like Freddy, Ana and Gombe. We have been badly affected,” said Mia

On his part, NWRA chairperson Engineer James Mambulu said they are scaling up activities to the national grid.

Mambulu then called upon on the funds’s recipients to ensure prudent use for the intended purpose.

Water Resource Act of 2013 established NWRA to provide management, conservation, use and control of water resources.
