Mulanje South West Constituency legislator, George Chaponda has asked government to continue with Social Cash Transfer, and Decent and Affordable Housing Subsidy programmes, saying his people are benefiting from the two instruments.
He was speaking Sunday during at the elevation ceremony of Traditional Authority Nthiramanja of Mulanje to Senior Chief Nthiramanja and Group Village Head (GVH) Maoni of Phalombe to Sub Traditional Authority Maoni.
The function took place at Mulanje Boma and was presided over by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri.
Chaponda, a former Minister of Agriculture and Water Development, said the Cash Transfer Programme has been pivotal in promoting food security in his area as households have economically been empowered.
He said following economic empowerment, households are able to run small scale businesses to support their families whereas Cement and Malata Subsidy Programme has changed the face of rural communities for the better.
“The people of Mulanje have benefited a lot from numerous programmes government is implementing in rural areas. For that we are very thankful to government.
“However, we would like to ask the government to continue with these programmes as they have the capacity of alleviating poverty at grassroot level,” he said.
He then hailed the elevating of the two traditional leaders from Mulanje and Phalombe, saying they are responsible for championing development in communities.
