The United States of America (USA) has issued a security alert to its citizens in Malawi, warning them of potential civil unrest in the country following the death of Vice President Saulos Chilima in a plane crash on Monday.
The US Embassy in Lilongwe has advised its citizens to exercise caution and avoid areas with large crowds, as they can turn violent without warning.
The embassy has also warned of increased vehicular and foot traffic in the capital city of Lilongwe over the weekend, particularly in well-traveled routes, due to funerals and other activities related to the vice president’s death.
A memorial service is scheduled to take place at the Bingu National Stadium in Area 47 on Sunday, June 16, and US citizens have been advised to avoid the area due to anticipated heavy congestion and an unpredictable security situation.
Vice President Chilima’s burial is scheduled for Monday, June 17, in his home village of Nsipe, approximately three hours south of Lilongwe.
The US Embassy has advised its citizens to avoid traveling on the M1 highway heading south from Lilongwe until at least Tuesday, as it is expected to be more crowded than usual.
The US government has urged its citizens to monitor local media for updates, keep a low profile, and be aware of their surroundings.
They have also been advised to review their personal security plans and avoid crowds.
