59th Independence Anniversary: DPP MPs Chitsulo, Nthenda preside over social soccer finals in Mwanza

DPP Member of Parliament for Mulanje west counsel Yusuf Nthenda on Thursday, July 6,2023 stressed the need of sports development in particular football because it has proved to be the trusted vehicle of social development and human progress, and a significant manifestation of overall societal strength and the cultural advancement our society.

Nthenda was speaking yesterday at Chiwembu Community ground in Mwanza West Constituency where he was the Guest of Honour at football match between Nambilanje FC of Mulanje West Constituency vs Mwanza West Chiefs Select FC which was organized as part of Malawi’s 59th Independence Anniversary Celebration.

In his remarks, Nthenda said the power of sports enhances the identity of our societies, and the image of the nation in manifold.

“Football is one critical key that can help in deepening cooperation among the communities that resonate well with our efforts to build bridges of unity and harmony within our societies we live and I would like to salute our two leading chiefs, Senior Chief Juma and Senior Nthatche and Govati for bringing people two constituencies together to show solidarity and uniformity.

“Further to say  that regardless of our cultural and language differences, football discipline has the ability to bring the society together by connecting people with the sport that brings them joy, said Nthenda who is also DPP spokesman on legal affairs in Parliament.

Nthenda also urged the community to continue rallying behind their MP for continued development in the area.

Speaking earlier, Joyce Chitsulo emphasized that any sporting discipline breaks down the barriers that  divide people from one another and inspires and promotes peace and fraternity even in the unlikeliest situations.

She hailed chiefs for being the champions of social cohesion and socioeconomic transformation in their respective chiefdoms.

Traditional Authority Juma from Mulanje led his subordinates that played the football matches while from Mwanza chiefs were led by Senior Groups Tsegulani and Chimulango.

At the end of the matches chief teams shared the spoils and pocketed K75,000 each while Boarder FC from Mwanza defeated Mulanje West 1.0 and pocked K200,000 while the runners up got K100,000.

In the traditional category, there were Gule Wamkulu traditional dancers that competed against each other.

Kankoma Gule Wamkulu emerged as  winners and carted home K100,000 while Ntchache Gule Wankulu pocketed K50,000.

Every year Joyce Chitsulo organizes the 6th July Anniversary Celebrations in her constituency.
