Transparency, Good Governance Key to Africa’s Transformation-Chakwera

By Wisdom Ngwira

Lilongwe, August, Mana: President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says adherence to transparency and good governance are two key tools in ensuring that Africa achieves its dream of transformation.

The President said if many African countries are transparent and follow the rule of law, the continent’s long-term development agenda will be a reality.

He was speaking on Monday in Lilongwe during the opening of the 2022 African Bar Association Annual Conference.

“If all African countries are transparent and adhere to the rule of law, it will automatically result into equitable distribution of resources leading to balanced development. African countries need to clearly follow the rule of law,” said Chakwera.

The President said all African countries need to put in place strong governance institutional frameworks so that there are checks to correct any social, economic and political wrongs in the society.

“Our countries need to priorities resource allocation to critical institutions that promote good governance so that they work as effective as possible.

“If our nations allocate meaningful resources to these good governance institutions, they will help to uphold the rule of law hence developing the African continent and its long-term aspirations,” said the President.

Speaking earlier, President of the African Bar Association Hannibal Uwaifo said it is time for the World to appreciate various development steps that the African continent has been taking throughout the years especially in good governance as well as economic spheres.

“For a long time, we have heard so much stories about Africa’s inefficiencies like terrorism, poverty, kidnappings and continued human rights abuses by western communication agencies.

“It is now time for the world to also start hearing progressive stories that African nations have been doing like adherence to human rights issues, democracies that are prevalent in African nations as well as the tremendous steps that legal practitioners continue to do in Africa,” he said.

This year’s annual; conference is being held under the theme “Instituting an enduring legacy of transparent and accountable governance in Africa.”
