Lilongwe, June 6, Mana: Malawi stands a chance to benefit from the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Ministers of Gender meeting which starts on Tuesday the 7th to Friday 10th June.

Briefing the media ahead of the meeting, Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Patricia Kaliati said the meeting gives Malawi a chance to share with the other SADC member states of the best practices that have been made in the country register such as tremendous progress in gender mainstreaming among other issues.

“The meeting is going to remind us where we are and where we are lacking, according to the gender index and assessment Malawi is pushing and moving forward in the implementation of the gender equality act of 2013  where we have also seen a lot of women rising into top leadership positions lately,” said Kaliati.

The minister also said through the meeting, the country will also draw several lessons on how to enhance its gender mainstreaming activities.

UN Women Malawi Country Representative, Letty Chiwara said gender mainstreaming remains a key issue in the SADC region saying it is high time every one takes the responsibility of advancing women and girls at all levels.

“Women and girls have been left behind for a long time and gender mainstreaming will also enable for gender budgeting starting from the local levels in order to address the existing gender gaps,” she said.

NGO Gender Coordination Network Chairsperson, Barbara Banda, said the meeting comes at the right time when the country is coming from another big gender event, Generation Equality, where similar issues were also discussed saying this platform would take the discussions further for the benefit of the country and the whole SADC region.

Malawi is hosting the meeting for being the current holder of the SADC chair ship.
