KCH Bemoan Late Child Cancer Diagnosis

By Ireen Kayira

Lilongwe, October 10, Mana: Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) Cancer Ward has bemoaned late child cancer diagnosis which makes it difficult to treat the disease.

KCH Paediatric Oncologist, Casey MCAtee said this on Saturday in Lilongwe when Bwaila Lions Donated food items for children admitted in the cancer ward.

“Most parents come with their children when the cancer has reached a late stage for diagnosis and to start treating cancer at a late stage is not easy.

“Child Cancer is an illness that children can be cured if diagnosed early as such if parents see the signs they should not delay to bring their children to the hospital because we are losing lives which could have been saved otherwise,” he said.

He said that the donation of the food supplements will assist the children admitted in the ward because when they are taking cancer drags they need more nutritious food.

Bwaila Lions Club President, Madalo Haji said the club has donated food supplements like Eggs, Milk, peanut Butter, margarine among others.
“We managed to come up with these items after raising funds in a fun walk fundraising activity which we conducted on September 25,” said Haji.

She said Lions worldwide work in five main pillars which are diabetes, hunger, sight, environment and child cancer as such raising funds for children in the cancer ward for food supplements is their obligation.

“We also did this because we understand the big battle that these children are fighting and we want to help the fight until they win,” said Haji.

She said the chemotherapy that children go through makes them weak and they need nutritious food so that they are not malnourished and their bodies and immune system are strong.
