The facebook post by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Legislator Sam Kawale that he has registered to vote for Lazarus Chakwera in the fresh election may have caused a furor in UTM and among some MCP supporters.
But evidence has emerged that what Kawale said is the position of the inner circle of the party.
Worse still, MCP plans to give Saulos Chilima hell as vice president should they win the election.
A leaked WhatsApp conservation among members of the inner circle show that MCP top guns were never going to allow Chilima to lead the alliance.
To begin with, in response to Kawale’s post, MCP Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka summoned Kawale to a disciplinary hearing for purportedly jeopardizing the spirit of the alliance with his comment.
The WhatsApp leaks from Tambala Group shows that Mkaka only did this to hoodwink Chilima and his people into thinking that MCP is comfortable with him.
Mkaka did not mean what he wrote in the letter, nor was there going to be any punishment on Kawale.
One of his texts reads; “Ineso I am for and behind you…. Don’t worry, just avail yourself (at the disciplinary hearing). Palibe ma issues apa. We have come from afar.”
And he admits that he has written Kawale the letter because he has been pressured by some senior ranks in the party to summon Kawale.
In addition, the texts suggest MCP needs Chilima in the alliance, as running mate, for them to ride on his shoulders to power.
In the event that they win the fresh election with Chakwera as leader of the alliance, they will give Chilima some good hell.
This is revealed in this text by MP Ulemu Msungama: “Koma Hon Mkaka could have called us tikumane osati zamilandu…tonse stand yathu have always been the same mfana uja sangatibere shine…mfana akhala running mate azizangododedwa…”
MCP also fears that if Chilima were to be president, he would make sure MCP never rules Malawi.
“Mwana uja kungokhala president basi ife tiiwale zozalamuliraso,” adds Msungama.
These texts demonstrate the level of mistrust between MCP and UTM even as they go into the election as one entity.
However, Mkaka indicates there are also divisions within MCP on the decision for Chakwera to lead the alliance.
He says there are some senior people in the party who have been pushing for Chilima to lead the alliance “for their own interests and benefits”.
Earlier, reports emerged that the MCP faction of Kasungu MPs wants Chilima to lead the alliance.
That Chakwera is leading the alliance should be bad news for UTM members who have all along insisted on Chilima leading the alliance. They said either Chilima leads the alliance or they would not vote.
Already, in reaction to Kawale’s post, Chilima’s social media people have been pushing graphics quoting Chakwera as having said he accepts to be runningmate to Chilima.
It is yet to be seen how the truth about the pairing will be received by the UTM supporters.
As it is, the alliance between UTM and MCP is largely a marriage of mere convenience. It is already tempered by deep mistrust between the two sides and there is harboring of evil intentions against each other should they win the election.
What more evidence does Malawians need to believe that the DPP govt is using macra to spy on its own citizens?
