Malawi Funeral Ceremonies Limited to Fifty People

Funerals shall comply with social distance restrictions- Phiri

As a measure of fighting the spread of Covid-19, Malawi government says a maximum of fifty people will be allowed to attend a funeral ceremony with immediate effect.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri announced the new measure on Thursday during a press briefing by a Special Cabinet Committee Covid-19 in Lilongwe.

“Funerals shall comply with social distance restrictions, and be attended by a maximum number of 50 people. Observation of COVID-19 sanitary and health measures is a requirement at all funerals,” said Dr. Phiri

He added:  “These measures are aimed at preventing the further spread of the virus and containing it since there are now reported cases

Among others, the government has also suspended all public events such as Mobile markets, cultural events, Wedding Ceremonies and sports events.

Malawi has so far registered eight cases of coronavirus, including one death and According to World Health Organization, as of Wednesday morning the world registered over 1.3 million cases of Covid-19 with over 72, OOO people.
