Speaker Msowoya: We Can Do Away with Health Breaks

Speaker of the National Assembly Richard Msowoya on Friday proposed that Parliament should consider doing away with the 30-minutes health breaks, saying the tradition is an avoidable time consumer.

Malawi Parliament takes a 30 minutes break after every 2 hours of deliberations and according to Msowoya, the local House of Laws is probably the only one in Africa that has such a tradition.

“I have been in a number of parliaments accross Africa and beyond, and I should say we are the only ones that has health breaks in between the sessions. Our colleagues across the region only have lunch breaks.

“May be it’s the high time we consider Scrapping off these breaks because they really steal away our time looking at the pile of business we have to transact,” said Msowoya before suspending the House for a morning health break on Friday.

There was no immediate reaction from both sides of the House, but if implemented, the move would be seen as a cost cutting measure on the part of parliamentarians.
