Lawyer Returns Text Books He Stole In Secondary School

By Austin Kakande

A Malawian lawyer based in South Africa has returned the text books he had stolen from the library of the secondary school he was studying about ten years ago.

The lawyer, Mafuno Makupe, who did his secondary education at Mulanje Mission Secondary School between 1997 and 2000, told Malawi Voice that he pilfered Geography’s Burnet, Physical Science’s Maclean, History and English Language books during his sojourn at the school.

However, he has confessed that he was feeling guilty consciousness whenever he thought about what he did and has decided to give back ten times more books than he had stolen to his old school.

“I managed to get away with it but there has always been this grave feeling haunting me. The books helped me to pass with flying colors during my MSCE exams but I feel it is time to repent my sins by giving back the stolen items.

“I noted that there are several students at the school who are suffering and lacking text books for their studies due to my sins. May the Lord forgive me,” lamented the Lawyer.

The 28-year-old said that although it might be embarrassing to tell the teachers and the students of his old school on the reasons he was returning the books, he has gathered enough courage to wipe off the dark mark from his soul.

Nevertheless, Mulanje Mission Secondary School headmaster, who received the books on the school’s behalf, could not be reached for comment on his mobile phone.

But one of the teachers at the school, speaking on strict condition of anonymity, said they are happy that their former student has realized that stealing schools property is immoral and uncalled for.

“Many students suffered due to his insane actions. But it is good that he has shown remorse at his behavior and we urge other people who did similar acts to follow his good example,” said the teacher.
