Landmine Kills Two Children In Ntcheu

By Justice Mponda

Two children have been killed and a man seriously injured after a suspected Landmine exploded in Sela Village , which shares boarder with Mozambique , in Dowa, over the weekend

The area is prone to Landmines following a twenty year old civil war which gripped Mozambique and ended over a decade ago.

A villager close to the families of the two children said the children met their predicament when there were in the field hunting mice.

“While there they came across a canister which they took into the village and tried to break it, it then exploded killing them on the spot and injuring the other two,” said the villager

The matter is being handled with the Mozambique police as the police in Malawi said they were not aware of the incident.

However Lieutenant Rosario Almando, a Mozambican police officer who is handling the issue confirmed of the incident but refused to give more details saying they were still investigating the matter.

“We are yet to establish whether it is a bomb or something else, and until then we won’t be in a very good position to give more details,” he said

But the villager still insisted that it was a bomb looking at the magnitude of the explosion. The killed Children were laid to rest on Monday amidst fears that there was also another Landmine planted near Sela market.
