Cotton Development Trust For Fair Deals
By Austin Kakande
The Newly formed Cotton Development Trust (CDT) says it wants to see both cotton producers and buyers getting a fair deal on the market.
CDT was formed about eighteen months ago after realising that most cotton bodies were toothless.
CDT Chairperson Patrick Khembo said apart from consolidating efforts of all players in cotton value chain, the body would also want every body to benefit from the crop.
“We would want both sides to get fair deals, in as much as we appreciate government’s intervention in pricing, but we feel this is the high time we engage each other on a round table.
“Individual groups were working in isolation, so their efforts were not integrated. This gave our government tough time but we now have established a viable pricing mode,” he said
Khembo added that problems facing the cotton industry could not be solved by interfering in pricing, citing country such as Zimbabwe which is now reaping the fruits of involving each other on the round table discussion.
During the official opening of Agricultural Trade Fair last week, president Bingu wa Mutharika threatened to deport all farm produce buyers who continue defiling his minimum set price.
