SOME enemies of the Malawi nation are alarming people with messages intended to discourage them from registering their simcards.
They are circulating messages to threaten phone users on the issue of simcard registration, claiming that government will be monitoring their social media conversations and phone calls once the simcards are registered.
The truth is that the exercise is solely meant to fight crime in Malawi and it is impossible for a any government system to monitor such conversations.
Parliament passed a law in 2106 that provided for registration of simcard and generic numbers as a way of controlling abuse.
This was in response to rampant cases of people being bullied on the phone from anonymous callers, criminals using multiple number to terrorize their targets, people being conned of their money and suffering broken marriages and relationships due to bad texts sent to their partners.
In all these cases, the crime perpetrators become untraceable as they dump the simcards they have used immediately after executing their crimes.
It is because of these abuses that Parliament came up with the law to make it possible to trace those who use phones to commit crimes.
Phone service providers are the ones that will be doing the registration and not any government department. It is them that will also keep the records of a phone user. No government department is mandated to register phone users or keep their records.
The providers are also required by law and this is provided in their licence conditions to keep your details under strict confidentiality.
