The Malawi Congress Party continues to confirm to all, whether intentionally or not, that here is a party desperate to get into government, not to serve Malawians but to sort out itself out of its grinding poverty. It is a well-known fact that the MCP is so broke that it has thrown away any semblance of dignity or principle, rather anything that can bring it a few coins is considered a viable option to pursue.
Those who follow MCP developments, can agree that the confusion that has engulfed the party, is mainly driven by its incessant desire to acquire a few coins for its survival. Alhajj Mia, is calling the shots in the MCP despite being a few months old in the party, because he is viewed as a financier who can bail out the party. The question though, is, how does the MCP contemplate to repay such a financier? Well, the hope is to win the forth coming elections and use public funds to reward their financier.
Does anyone wonder at Dr. Chakwera’s actions on the K4billion kwacha development funds earmarked for the constituencies? For starters, Dr. Chakwera mobilized MCP parliamentarians to support the bill. A few dalys after parliament rose, Dr. Chakwera through Acting Secretary General, Mkaka, announces a U-turn on the decision the party was supportive of in parliament. Never mind whether such a u-turn is consequential or not. The main reason for the u-turn, MCP claims, is that Dr. Chakwera and his MCP team did not have enough information, when it supported the motion.
This analysis wishes to submit that, it is indeed true that the MCP supported the motion because it did not have enough information. The scanty information that Dr. Chakwera and MCP had was that they would receive the money and manage it themselves, bypassing the well-established systems that would ensure transparency and accountability. The thought that they would handle the money was so sweet that they quickly nodded to the motion. Now that the government has clarified the funds will be remitted to councils to ensure transparency and accountability, Dr. Chakwera and team, feels this will not personally benefit them or their party.
This confirms the party’s position of prioritizing party or personal survival to serving the nation. It is the clarity from government that the beleaguered MCP leadership could not pretend anymore but say it as it is, that as MCP they did not have enough information, now that the money will go to councils and not their pockets, then they are not party to that decision.
Therefore the simple reason the MCP is on a u-turn on the K4billion development funds which it initially gave a node to, is the fact that these funds will be remitted into councils which means will be subjected to internal controls to ensure that every single tambala will be accounted for.
This is in sharp contrast to what the MCP had hoped for, which was to have the funds remitted into the personal accounts of their parliamentarians. All other excuses advanced by the party are nothing but lies. A simple advice though, is that a “lie may take care of the immediate present but it has no future”
