The atmosphere was intimidating for anyone who considers Mchinji their strong hold. The crowd was a statement of intent from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) that it is grabbing Mchinji West.
You should have been there to see both the young and the old, and yes, the grey haired, who openly said they fed up with the mediocre leadership from MCP and have come to have a new lease of life in DPP.
Yes, you should have been there to see the blue parade and triumph entry at the jam packed Chimteka primary in the area of Traditional Authority Simphasi by the ruling party led by the Vice President Dr.SaulosiChilima.
The Vice was flanked by Secretary General EcleainKudontoni, Minister of Gender Children, Disability and Social Welfare Dr. Jean Kalilani, Transport and Public Works Minister JappieMhango, Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs Francis Mphepo, Presidential Advisor on Women Affairs NyadaniMakuta and Regional Governor Dean Josiah and his entire team as well as the entire DPP Mchinji district and Mchinji West committees.
Speaking to the thousands of people who attended the rally, the VP reiterated that DPP will win the by elections.
“Ndisanayambe ndiloleni ndipepese kwa anzathu a MCP ndi ena onse kamba kolephera chisankhochi. Pepani, pepani, pepani kwambiri (On the onset allow to extend my apologies to our competitors for losing this election),” said the Vice President, sound calm and collected like an Algebra teacher in a class of mutes.
The Vice President, who is an Advisor to the DPP NGC, also assured the people that government was in control to ensure that no one dies of hunger as a result of the floods and el nino that hit the country.
“As government we know about the hunger situation and we are in control so the opposition should not come here and just tell you that there is hunger. This is a national calamity and should be treated with the seriousness it deserves and not for politicking,” said the Vice President.
Speaking at the same rally, T/A Simphasi pleaded with the ruling DPP to welcome MCP die hards in the district whom he said are frustrated with the current squabbling MCP leadership and want to join DPP.
The T/A’s plea come at a time when MCP’ Vice President Richard Msowoya who is also the Speaker of the National Assembly and Jessie Kabwira have asked to join DPP following the never ending infighting in the party.
Msowoya has seen the writing in the wall following the coming in of lower shire giant Sidik Mia who has come to be running mate to Chakwera in 2019.
Just last week there was a verbal fight between Msowoya and Chakwera, with the MCP President blaming his 2014 running mate for the loss on the grounds that he did not bring the required votes in the north.
DPP and PP took a big chunk of votes in the north, a development that proved that Msowoya is lightweight politician hence being abandoned now.
