Journalists Celebrate Press Freedom Day

As the global is fighting coronavirus pandemic, Journalists in the in the World are today celebrating Press Freedom Day (WPFD) under the theme Journalism without fear or favour’.

According to Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA)- Malawi Chapter Chairperson, Tereza Ndanga, this year’s theme is a call to action on media independence which is one of the fundamental principles of the Windhoek Declaration.

“ We take the celebrations as a reminder to stakeholders that journalists and the media in general need to be free from political and commercial interests to effectively do their job and serve in the public interest,” said Ndanga

Ndanga also commended Media Managers and other r partners for the resuscitation of the Media Council of Malawi (MCM) to drive media self-regulation and ensure a professional, independent and accountable media sector in Malawi.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared 03rd May as World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press
