Malawi’s Tobacco Market to Open April 25

The Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) Chief Executive Officer Kaisi Sadala has disclosed that 2020 tobacco selling season will start on  25th  April and Lilongwe Auction Floors.

According TCC C.E.O Sadala, Chinkhoma and Limbe Auction Floors will open on 22nd and 27th of April respectively while Limbe Auction Floors will open on 4th day of May 2020.

The CEO Sadala further disclosed that TTC has set a number of preventive measures in order to protect farmers and buyers from Covid-19, a disease caused by coronavirus.

“Stakeholders have been conducting several meetings and consulting health experts on how it can effectively run markets midst of Covid-19 pandemic,” said Sadala in a statement.

Among others measures, the Commission will restrict entry into AHL Tobacco Sales to only people with critical task to perform and they will be require to under-go body temperature scanning and regular  sanitization.

In order to ensure one metre social distance, the commission will restrict number of people on the floors to a maximum of one hundred people.

According to latest crop estimates, this year Malawi is expected to produce 154.7 million kilogrammes of Tobacco.
