MEC Offices Still Operational

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) offices are still in operational in all the four regions despite a ‘symbolic closure’ by the self-claimed human rights defenders body the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC).

On Thursday, Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) hired HRDC which led Timothy Mtambo to seal MEC offices in Blantyre, Mzuzu and Lilongwe demanding the resignation of MEC commissioners.

Reacting to the development, MEC’s Spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said all MEC offices across the country are operational. He said HRDC has no mandate to lock MEC offices.

“MEC has got offices all over the country. We will still operate whether somebody has locked it or not.

The mandate is given to MEC by the constitution of the country that we should deliver credible elections in this country,” said Mwafulirwa

According to the supreme laws of the land, only the president has the powers to fire MEC chairperson not HRDC or Lazarus Chakwera.
