Today July 16, Her Excellency the First Lady Professor Gertrude Mutharika who is also Patron of Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust presided over the launch of Merck Foundation Program in Malawi at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
The project which Merck Foundation will implement in conjunction with BEAM Trust is called “Merck More Than a Mother” initiative.
During the launch which was held under the theme “Addressing infertility, restoring dignity to the affected’, Professor Gertrude Mutharika was also unveiled as the Ambassador of Merck More Than a Mother Initiative in Malawi.
The program aims at addressing issues of infertility by among other things training gynecologists to help manage infertility and advocate for end of stigma as well as empowering men and women with fertility issues in Africa through access to information, education, health and mindset change.
The launching ceremony was marked by testimonies from men and women affected by infertility.
Merck is a family Pharmaceutical Company formed in Germany over 300 years ago. As a company they are also running a foundation that deals with various issues affecting people in the areas of education, health among others. It is through this Foundation that Merck More than a Mother initiative falls.
Merck Foundation’s efforts are inspired and supported by research, which has shown that 90% of infertility cases are reversible with medical treatment and care. Therefore, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Population and Ministry of Education, community leaders, the initiative will provide medical awareness to the affected on how they can access support and care.
