Former President Dr Bakili Muluzi:Barred

Former president Bakili Muluzi has accused government of preventing him from attending Nelson Mandela’s funeral. Muluzi said his office requested funding for the trip but government refused to release the funds on the basis that it was too broke.

The information and civic education minister Brown Mpinganjira said the decision to deny Muluzi funds was part of austerity measures government is implementing in the wake of donor aid freeze.
Brown Mpinganjira“If people are accusing president Banda of wasting resources for attending the funeral, what more if it was the former president? said Mpinganjira.

Mpinganjira said government could have loved to send Muluzi and all former veeps but it has no money.

Austerity measures only being implemented when it is an ordinary Malawian but the president can travel the breadth and length of Malawi and the globe, even going to South Africa twice! This is double standards by Mpinganjira and his boss. It woukd have costed Malawi government little had the president who normally has a big entourage had delegated this task to even former President after all Mandela was not a sitting but former president too. The problem is our leader has appetite for travel and cameras and knew Muluzi would stole the show at her expense had he been granted the opportunity to travel to SA. Let’s forget about lying that austerity measures are working when indeed they are just being abused and penalising Malawians hence subjecting them to misery when the authorities are busy milking the thin cow day in day out. Malawi wil not change even if leaders continue globe trotting, the country will simply collapse. Economic theory knowledge should be a must for aspiring presidential candidates for it will make them understand the economic implications of foregoing austerity measures. God save Malawi from marauding hyenas. On the other hand bwana Muluzi should have used personal money to travel to SA. He is managing to fund Atupele so why fail to do so and travel to SA? It is a pity to always rely on handouts from government when we can do something on our own. This too is greed at its best and must not be encouraged in our country
