Contrary to President Joyce Banda’s public sentiment that vendors in Malawi are the one’s depleting maize in Admarc depots, her own Joyce Banda Foundation International (JBFI) has been implicated in the malpractice, Malawi Voice can reveal.
Investigations by the Malawi Voice have revealed that officials from JBFI have been going around Admarc markets in the southern region and buying the gain in bulk for undisclosed reasons.
The officials have so far been to Chiradzulu and Chilobwe Admarc markets. ironically, the poor women have been reported suffocating on the queues in the two depots. In the latest of the incidents, officials from Joyce Banda International on Wednesday went and bought all the 300 maize bags that had been delivered to Zomba Admarc the same day by the government grain marketer leaving villagers that had spends hours on cue waiting for the maize desperate.
‘‘They came in a lorry and told us that the president had told them to come here and buy the maize we had received. We had no option but to give them’’ said an officer who asked for anonymity.
Asked why they could not check with authorities to avoid being duped by people taking advantage of the president the officer said the situation could not allow that.
‘‘ My friend, there was too much tension here and after noting the reaction of the public our boss here just disappeared leaving us with the Joyce Banda officials, we could not go against their demands. The people wore PP t-shirts and were using a Joyce Banda Foundation vehicle. What did you expect us to do? ’’. He added.
The officer however indicated that the Joyce Banda Foundation officials paid for the maize.
Maize which is a staple food for most Malawians has become very scarce leading to skyrocketing prices in the country.
In some markets such as Mbayani and Ndirande a 50 kg bag of maize is selling at MK 10,000.00, the highest ever in the country’s history.
