Presidential Spokesperson Heatherwick Ntaba has branded Alliance for Democracy (Aford) MP for Rumphi Central Enock Chihana a ‘chicken hearted politician’ for demanding a referendum within three months.
Delivering his maiden parliamentary contribution on Tuesday, Chihana said President Bingu wa Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have lost their mandate to rule and must therefore take the government back to the people through a referendum.
Chihana said economic and social crisis Mutharika has created “through his persistent disregard to IMF and Western donors’ advise” required a political solution, “which is calling for a referendum within three months”.
“He (Mutharika) has continuously said that the opposition does not suggest solutions, so this is what we, as Aford, we are suggesting to him.
“My triumphant over DPP with such a wide margin as 70 percent, during the Rumphi Central by elections, speaks volume on how the party has lost popularity in the country,” said Chihana, son to trade unionist Chakufwa Chihana, who is credited for igniting a war against one party regime in the early 1990s.
But reacting to the sentiments, Ntaba said Chihana as a legitimately elected law maker, should have full knowledge of the country’s constitution.
“Where was it written in our constitution that there should be a referendum when the country is facing economic challenges. And by the way which country on earth is without challenges today and how many have conducted referendums to solve such challenges?
“It is such immaturity and chicken-heartedness on the part of Enock Chihana, that we always say our opposition side is not helping Malawians.
“When calling for suggestions from the opposition it does not mean that we will take on board even such unintelligent ones,” said Ntaba.
